The Biomedical Science BSc (Hons) degree at the University of Hertfordshire is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS). Students completing the IBMS portfolio for the year of placement, successfully certified, receive the Applied Biomedical Science Award. Through the work of biomedical science, you can help improve the lives of millions of people suffering from various diseases. You will learn the causes, diagnosis and treatment of major diseases such as cancer, heart disease, blood disorders, respiratory diseases, biochemical and endocrine disorders, and infectious diseases. Once you have developed a basic understanding of biology and chemistry, you will move on to specialized fields such as pathophysiology, molecular biology, hematology, clinical microbiology, immunology, biochemistry and transfusion science. You will have the exciting opportunity to study abroad or take a long-term job in the industry. This grade is approved by the Institute of Biomedical Science and the Royal Society of Biology.
Every week students often spend time in lectures, lunch and practical lab programs. Practical work is an essential element of all Bioscience degrees. Most modules for the second and third year are coursework and examination. The nature of the reading activity varies, depending on the module and includes themes, reports, actual writing, posters and conference presentations. Upon graduation, you will qualify for employment as a biomedical scientist at the National Health Service and the Laborator Public Service. In addition, job opportunities exist in Blood Transfusion Service Laboratories; the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries; forensic laboratories; sales and marketing in the health care sector; education and research. 80% of our students go to work or study after graduation. Common job titles for recent graduate students are: Health Care Professional Training Coordinator, Pharmaceutical Coordinator, Drug Safety Coordinator, Medical Representative, History Science, Hospital Researcher, Research Assistant, Technology Assistant and Referral Assistant.
