Everything you need to know about the education system in Canada is right here!
One of the major reasons behind Canada’s popularity among students is its affordability as an educational destination. The government of Canada invests wholeheartedly in the country’s educational institutions and system. As far as higher education goes, the Canadian government is among the top three countries around the world to spend sufficient amounts on post-secondary education.
The education system in Canada is managed by the provincial governments; therefore the levels of study and education may lie in different clusters with different names.
Academic Year
Most Canadian colleges and universities typically offer classes from early September until the end of April or early May. Winter session are often divided into two separate terms that conduct from September till December and then from January till April. There are several different kinds of summer studies offered from May till August. There are some select schools in Canada that offer a year-round schooling.
Depending on the university, undergraduate degrees take either three or four years to complete. Postgraduate degrees often take one to two years to finish, whereas master’s programs generally take between one to two years and a PhD program takes longer than in other countries. They usually take between four or seven years to complete.
Teaching and Leaning Style
Canadian universities are devoted to research and high-quality teaching, as well as, they also focus on providing opportunities that improve a student’s learning, career and living. Classes at university are a combination of lectures, are taught by professors and can contain anywhere between 30 to 200 students, and tutorials that usually have a linked component such as a lab or a tutorial. Tutorials or labs allow a more in-depth discussion of topics within a course. The sizes of these tutorials generally range from 20 to 30 students.
Fees and Scholarships
Education costs
Education in Canada may prove to be slightly expensive for students to study abroad. However, comparing these Canadian universities to British educational systems, Australian, New Zealand or the US, Canada offers the lowest tuition fee rates for foreign students. To cover tuition fees, one will need between CA$7000 and CA$29,000 yearly.
Generally, it is usually found that humanities, education and arts courses are of lower cost, while subjects such as medicine and engineering are more likely to be comparatively expensive. If a student wants to receive a postgraduate level degree, the tuition fees are generally higher and the costs vary depending on the program. As with most other countries, MBA programs are usually highly costly and expensive. The estimated average cost of such programs is around CA$42,000, usually.
Scholarships
A number of Canadian universities give the opportunity to many students (those who exceed the required credentials) a chance to receive scholarships and awards, mostly of these which are international students who achieve outstanding results. The amount of money available and type of award varies between the various institutions, programs, and the achievements of the individual student. Receiving a scholarship is competitive and one must generally apply directly to the school that offers them.
