The SDS program was introduced by the Government of Canada to streamline the study permit application process for international students from certain countries, including Pakistan. To be eligible for the SDS visa, Pakistani students must fulfill the following requirements:
- Acceptance: Students must have an acceptance letter from a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada. DLIs are recognized by provincial or territorial authorities to host international students.
- Tuition Payment: Students must provide proof of payment for the first year of tuition fees at the DLI.
- Language Proficiency: Students must demonstrate their proficiency in English by providing the results of an approved language test, International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with an overall 6.0 score with no sub-score less than 6.0.
- Financial Proof: Students must provide evidence of sufficient funds to cover living expenses for themselves and any accompanying family members while studying in Canada in the form of a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) Account.
- Upfront Medical Examination: Students must undergo a medical examination from a panel physician approved by the Government of Canada to ensure they meet the health requirements.
- Police Clearance: Students must provide a police clearance certificate to demonstrate good character and meet the safety and security requirements.
Process of GIC Account in Canada for Pakistani Students
Opening a GIC account is one of the financial requirements for the SDS visa. The GIC program is designed to ensure that students have access to funds to support their living expenses in Canada. The following steps outline the process:
- Choose a Participating Financial Institution: Students should select one of the participating financial institutions authorized by the Government of Canada. These institutions provide GIC account services and offer various packages.
- Application and Deposit: Complete the application form provided by the selected financial institution. Submit the necessary documents, including proof of identity, proof of enrollment, and the required deposit amount (usually CAD $20,635) to open the GIC account.
- Confirmation of Deposit: Once the financial institution receives the deposit, they will issue a confirmation letter indicating that the GIC funds are in place.
- Obtaining a Receipt: Students should ensure that they obtain a receipt or confirmation of the GIC account deposit for future reference and visa application purposes such as requesting the Letter of Acceptance (LOA).
- Study Permit Application: Students can include the GIC confirmation letter as part of their study permit application to demonstrate financial sufficiency.
By following these steps and preparing the required documents, you can successfully apply for a student visa to study in Canada. We highly recommend that you ask your HS counselor to guide you through the process, and ensure that everything is done correctly.
